Nicola Pocock reports:

Well, down to an easy mistake, we ended up entered as a men's novice VIII, so knew we were unlikely to win our category! However, it did mean we had plenty to push off, and on to, and it could well have worked in our favour- we had a pretty exciting race!

A strong warm up set us up nicely, and nobody let the carnage below the start line phase them. We started the race well- hitting 34, before settling to a strong 32 which allowed us to overtake the Leys crew ahead quickly. Pushing on, our next target was St Peter's, who proved more difficult. They took advantage as we moved out into the stream to overtake, and pushed on. We battled level for what felt like half the race until we were forced to move over to the opposite bank to let the Nottingham University men come by. Making the most of it though, and not letting a few blade clashes phase us, we were clear of St Peter's by the time Nottingham were past.

By this stage you could tell we were tired, and our rowing wasn't the prettiest it's ever been. It did, however, have grit. We pushed on together, at no point just letting it go, all the way to the finish. A race that started with good attack and rhythm, and finished with grit. Awesome.

Matthew Howard reports:

This race had the potential to be very painful! Although the start was somewhat manic, the crew really stepped up and found that rhythm we've been searching for over the past weeks. Great strong rowing with good cover and ratio. As crews pushed onto us, the crew stayed vigilant where it might have fallen apart a few weeks ago. We were locked in a battle with Leicester for a good 10 minutes, they slowly advanced, but we reacted well. Our best rowing was with Leicester half a length or so off, a very encouraging feeling for bumps. Again we held them when side by side, and at one point gaining a seat or two back, against the marshals assumption that Leicester were easily overtaking us. Eventually tiredness started to show and Leicester pressed through. The final 2k became somewhat more scrappy, and technique declined slightly. Pushes however remained determined, and we gritted it out the end to bank a very respectable time for a Clare M2 crew. Presumptions such as "Clare M2 at Peterborough...really?" have certainly been put in their place.
